Mission Statement:  The staff at Bennett Elementary School is dedicated to working together with students, parents, and the community to provide a safe and orderly environment where students will develop the appropriate social and academic skills they need to be successfull in school and the community.

 Principal:

Mr. Scott Hutchins earned an Associate's Degree in Arts from Jackson Community College and a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Michigan State University. He began his teaching career at Northeast Elementary, teaching 6th grade and graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a MA in Educational Administration in 2002. After teaching English and Enrichment classes at the Middle School at Parkside from 2000-2002, Scott served as Assistant Principal there for four years. His most recent assignment before becoming principal at Bennett, was as an assistant principal at Jackson High School. 

 History:

Bennett School has been in existence for over 135 years, first opening its doors in 1869. The original building was replaced with a new structure in 1968.

 Demographics:

Bennett school serves approximately 500 students in kindergarten through sixth grades.   It is located at the end of Bennett Street, tucked in a neighborhood setting near West Avenue. The school grounds are beautified by multiple flower gardens developed by students, and a bed of over 2000 daffodils planted by the entire school. There is a facility that allows staff to teach classes outdoors when weather permits, which is especially conducive for science to include bird watching of multiple species.

 Curriculum:

The curriculum at Bennett Elementary School is set forth by Jackson Public Schools and is aligned to the State of Michigan Standards and Benchmarks. The Bennett School staff believes citizenship and social skills are a prerequisite to learning and essential to life skills.   The Bennett motto, “I-Care” teaches caring, respect and responsibility. Social skills are taught in all classrooms each month.

Of Special Interest:

The Bennett Elementary School Citizenship Program, which incorporates “positive choices” and “fixing problems” has won State of Michigan awards. Students learn and gain valuable experiences through various service projects and benefit from numerous partnerships throughout the Jackson community.

On behalf of an outstanding team of highly qualified teachers and support staff, it is with great pleasure and pride that I welcome you to Bennett Elementary School. 

 

At Bennett, we are committed to providing a safe, caring environment where all students can learn and grow.  With a primary focus on elevating student achievement and social skills, we are educating students with innovative instructional strategies that will provide all learners with the appropriate social and academic skills they need to be successful in school and the community.

 

We know you want what’s best for your child(ren), and we also know that students learn best when their parents or guardians take an active role in their learning experiences. We invite and encourage you to become partners with us in your child(ren)’s education by making a commitment to stay involved throughout the entire school year.
