JHS Performing Arts Classes

   The performing arts department offers the following classes. Links to course pages will be added as pages are created by JHS teachers. If a class is taught by more than one teacher, the teachers will be listed in parentheses after the class name.

AP Music Theory

Grades: 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

This course offers the equivalent of first year music theory at the college or university level. It is designed to prepare students for the AP Music Theory Exam taken in the second semester.

Concert Band

Grades: 9
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

This course offers fundamental training in instrumental music performance including tone production, ear training, rhythmic competency and basic music theory. All students who are interested in beginning musical training in instrumental music who have an instrument are encouraged to enroll. This course also serves most freshman percussionists.

Cadet Band & Cadet Wind Ensemble

Grade: 9
Placement by audition

Course is designed as an introduction to music learning and performing at the high school level. Group performs repertoire appropriate to instrumentation and proficiency. Other classroom literature includes Queenwood Developing Band Books Number 1 and 4 (1988, 1992) and Concert Selections for Winds and Percussion (C. Azzara, 1995). All students are encouraged to participate in the M.S.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival as well as perform at M.S.B.O.A. Band Festival. The group performs at no less than three formal concerts per school year.

 

Students may participate in extracurricular performing groups like the Viking Marching Band.

Varsity Band

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition

Course is designed as a traditional concert band performing at the M.S.B.O.A. Class C level. All students are encouraged to participate in the M.S.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival as well as perform at M.S.B.O.A. Band Festival. The group performs at no less than three formal concerts per school year. Students may participate in extracurricular performing groups like the Viking Marching Band.

Varsity Wind Ensemble

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Course is designed as an advanced performing ensemble with specific instrumentation requirements. The VWE performs at M.S.B.O.A. Class B level. Each member is encouraged to perform at the M.S.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival. All members are required to perform in no less than three formal concerts per year and District Band Festival. Students may also participate in extracurricular ensembles, such as the Viking Marching Band, or brass and woodwind quintets.

Symphony Band

Grades: 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Course is designed as an advanced performing ensemble with limited instrumentation. The Symphony Band performs at M.S.B.O.A. Class A level. Each member is encouraged to perform at the District M.S.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival. All members are required to perform in no less than three formal concerts per year and District Band Festival. Students may also participate in extracurricular ensembles, such as the Viking Marching Band, or brass and woodwind quintets.

Class Percussion

Grades: 9, 10, 11
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Course is designed to offer instrument specific instruction to percussionists. This course is usually offered to those students who wish to build individual skills and knowledge in rudimental drumming, drum set, keyboard, timpani and other percussion instruments. Each member is encouraged to perform at the District M.S.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Advanced Percussion

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Course is designed to offer instrument specific instruction to the percussionist who successfully auditioned for the drum-line. Students also perform with bands and orchestra in formal concerts as well as in percussion ensembles. Each member is encouraged to perform at the District M.S.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Jazz Band & Jazz Class

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Course is designed as a training ensemble for jazz and improvisation. Skills include: playing by ear, memorization skills and improvisation. Students perform in no less than three performances per year including M.S.B.O.A. Jazz Festival.

Jazz Ensemble

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition

Course is designed as an advanced performing ensemble. Students demonstrating skills and knowledge in jazz styles and improvisation are challenged with performance opportunities in a variety of instrumental combinations, including regional and state M.S.B.O.A. Jazz Festivals.

Orchestra

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Course is designed to enhance skills in string performance. Repertoire selected based on instrumentation and performers’ proficiency. Each member is encouraged to perform at the M.S.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival. Ensemble presents no less than three performances per year.

Class Guitar

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

This course is designed to offer instrument specific instruction to guitarists. The focus of this course is twofold. First, the rudiments of basic guitar technique are studied in both the melodic and harmonic musical dimensions. Second, this course maintains a focus on the creative aspects of music making. Music improvisation and composition are lifelong skills that can travel with a student throughout their entire lives. Other activities include: analysis of musicians and musical styles, music reading, music writing, and care and maintenance of the instruments. Instrument provided through generous support of the Jackson Community Foundation. (Limited to 18 students per class)

Advanced Class Guitar

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

This course is designed for those students that have successfully completed Class Guitar. It is also open to those students that can demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge covered in Class Guitar. Advanced techniques will include: slide playing, jazz chord theory, accompaniment styles, and polyphonic composition. Music improvisation and composition remain a primary focus of the course. Other activities include: advanced analysis of musicians and musical styles, and advanced music reading and writing. Instrument provided through generous support of the Jackson Community Foundation. (Limited to 18 students per class)

Class Voice

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Open elective, no prerequisite

Course is designed for any student who is interested in developing vocal skills. There will be great attention to vocal tone production, range development, reading musical notation and basic fundamentals of musicianship.

Women’s Chorus & Men’s Chorus

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Gender specific instruction designed to raise the level of individual singers’ vocal skills while performing great ensemble repertoire. Students’ will perform no less than three times per school year.

Euphony Choir

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

Euphony Choir members demonstrate the highest level of vocal performance at Jackson High School. The primary focus of the course is in the study of outstanding choral music literature and refining the skills of vocal technique and choral singing. Students are required to participate in M.S.V.M.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival and perform at the District and State M.S.V.M.A. Choir Festival.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Grades: 10, 11, 12
Placement by audition and/or approval of instructor

This class would balance the curriculum of the choral program through the study of jazz and contemporary popular music. A small instrumental ensemble for rehearsals and concert performances will accompany the singers. Much emphasis will be placed on improvisation. The group would perform at least three times a year.

Electronic Music

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Open elective

Students receive instruction in music technology in the electronic music lab at the middle school. Curriculum is designed for independent learners who are interested in gaining knowledge in music composition, recording and use of MIDI technology. Class will be relocated to the high school after the renovation process is completed.

Advanced Electronic Music

Grades: 10, 11, 12
Open elective

Students receive instruction in advanced use of recording technology and musical production. Course will also provide opportunities for interested students to continue developing their skills in music composition and use of technology.

Theater Arts-Tech

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Open elective

Students receive instruction in the basic elements of stage-craft including lighting, rigging, sound reinforcement and design and construction of sets. This a non-traditional class in that a significant portion of the class comprises of working as a theatre technician for events in the Jackson High School Auditorium. Some students may also gain employment opportunities at Jackson Community College, The Michigan Theatre and other performance venues.

Theater Arts I

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Open elective

This is semester course is designed for students interested in the performing arts. It addresses the basic elements of acting. In class students will explore the different forms of dramatic performance, study scenes and skits, become proficient with the terminology of the theater and the function of staging, costuming and make-up. Students also will analyze contemporary theater and experience the field of dramatic criticism through reading and writing.

Play Production

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Theater Arts I

This is a second semester continuation of Theater Arts I. Essentially, the skills are addressed in class are now put into practice in a performance based approach. Students will present at least one production of a work from the dramatic repertoire.

Advanced Dramatics

Grades: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Theater Arts I and Play Production

This course is designed to offer students who have demonstrated success and interest in the study of dramatics. This year long course will provide many performance opportunities including dramatic reading, character development, and movement. Other studies will include reading and analyzing scripts, creating short dramatic presentations, and observing other productions. Students will be encouraged to participate in annual productions of musical theater and plays at Jackson High School.
